Do you have enough insurance to cover all of your belongings?
Without a detailed inventory of your belongings, it is difficult
to access if you have enough insurance coverage. We suggest you
prepare a home inventory checklist and update the list every year.
Please note that certain items such as jewelry, furs and silverware
are limited to a maximum dollar amount on your policy. To ensure
full coverage, inquire about scheduling your items on a personal
property floater. Click here to download a checklist or call FAIR
Insurance and ask us for one.
With the increased winter use of heating devices such as fireplaces
and furnaces, be sure they are efficient, reliable and safe. You
should have your furnace checked and "tuned-up" annually by a qualified
professional. Proper maintenance prevents fires and carbon monoxide
poisoning, caused by insufficient combustion. Also, be sure you
have functioning carbon monoxide and smoke alarms in your home.
In your city, it may even be a bylaw requirement.
Be sure to keep your furnace clear of flammable substances such
as paint, varnish and solvents. Paper (especially those with oil
or paint in them), should be stored well away from the furnace.
If you are using combustible liquids or sprays, turn your furnace
off, including the pilot light (on your gas water heater too). An
explosion or fire can occur even if the fumes come in contact with
an open flame.
